"Tails" from the Reptile Room

Despite the rainy start, Edwin and his Spring Break A campers had a creepy good time at the Staten Island Zoo on Monday. After a misty trip to the forgotten Borough via ferry, a first for every one of this week's campers, Edwin and assistant counselor Prisca led the crew on a critter-packed jaunt through the wildlife sanctuary. Campers and counselors alike agreed that the zoo's reptile section was second to none, with huge anacondas and even a leopard rounding out the jungle-esque scene. Though the little ones were excited to be less than one foot away from the exotic creatures, they were more than happy about the glass barrier that stood between the snakes and themselves. Here's to hoping that the missing snake at the Bronx Zoo is found in time to make a visit to the reptile room there a possibility as well during an upcoming Adventure Camp week!
While there weren't any exhibits of the slithering variety, the children attending NY City Explorers' Spring Break Adventure Camp were much happier to have hands-on interaction with the those at the Museum of Moving Image on Tuesday afternoon. In Astoria, Queens, the heart of New York City's television and film industry, museum staff led the group on a tour that included crafting personalized flipbooks of each camper, created from 30-40 frames snapped in front of a green screen in the museum. The stills were printed and flipped to show campers what it was like to view a movie long before the days of Pixar. May we suggest a home viewing of Disney's Snow White to illustrate the point at home?
The grade school campers always have a great time with camp director Edwin at the helm. Careful to be sure that the littlest Explorers, our Explorers Academy Preschoolers, had their share of the fun too, Miss Brittany and her assistants cooked up some rainy day fun especially for the 2s and 3s. With a little of this and a pinch of that, afternoon cooking class turned some powders and eggs into a delish batch of brownies. Noon was especially excited to bake and gobble the treats, one of his favorite activities to do at home with his mama!
